Innovations: FreeWing Air V5 - new all-round wing with a large target group?

The most striking design feature of the Air V5 is its shape with a medium aspect ratio. According to the manufacturer's plan, this geometry is intended to, "offer a compromise between buoyancy, manoeuvrability and stability. This makes the Wing suitable for relaxed cruising on flat water as well as for more demanding downwind foiling or freestyle manoeuvres in the waves."

One major innovation is the use of the exclusive Ultra-X Canopy material. This promises improved durability combined with optimised performance. The exact properties of this material are not specified by the manufacturer. However, it is said to be a lightweight and tear-resistant fabric that ensures the wing retains its shape even under heavy loads.

Another new feature of the Air V5 is the newly developed boom made from prepreg carbon in the shape of a pistol grip. This design is intended to significantly improve the manoeuvrability and control of the wing, while the ergonomically shaped handle should enable more intuitive handling, which can benefit beginners in particular. At the same time, experienced wingers should also benefit from the more precise power transmission during demanding manoeuvres. The bag supplied with the Wing is also dimensioned so that the boom does not need to be dismantled before packing.

The combination of a medium aspect ratio, stiff base frame and carbon boom should make the FreeWing Air V5 a versatile all-rounder that is equally suitable for flat water cruising, surfing, downwind foiling and freestyle tricks. We will soon reveal whether this plan works - a test model has already been ordered.
