The RRD Evo is intended to complement the Italian manufacturer's product range with a handy wing for manoeuvres and tricks. We tested whether the plan works.

With the Wind Wing ( HERE go to the test) is already a declared all-rounder in the programme. In addition, there is now the Evo model, which should be one step ahead in terms of its suitability for manoeuvres and tricks and also deliver plenty of power at the lower wind limit.

The RRD Evo Wing on land:

The RRD Evo Wing is available in four sizes (3.5/4.5/5.5 & 6.5sqm) and two colour combinations. Compared to the all-rounder Wind Wing, there are immediately clear differences: the wing tips on the Evo are significantly slimmer, which should prevent the wing tips from dragging in the water when pumping. The Evo also has a slightly deeper profile. The grip system is also fundamentally different - following the general trend towards wider handles, RRD has also given the Evo three comfortable and wide grips that allow the hands to move sideways and guarantee that you can always surf with an even distribution of pull on your hands.

The large windows offer a good view before the jibe is initiated, but should not be bent too much, especially in cold temperatures.

We also present this wing in a short clip on our YouTube channel.

On the water:

Compared to the RRD Wind Wing, the Evo is a little softer when starting off, but it also loads up better and therefore has a little more traction, especially when pumping. To ensure that the wing offers the necessary firmness and does not feel spongy in the hands of heavy riders (>80kg), you should not go below the recommended maximum pressure of 7 psi. The grip system of the RRD Evo was completely convincing, the grips are comfortable, but above all offer plenty of lateral freedom to find a suitable grip position regardless of body size and weight. This means that the Wing is always well balanced in the hand.

The Evo also performs at a very high level in terms of manoeuvrability: the handles provide sufficiently direct contact with the wing, thanks to the large windows, visibility is good and the perceived weight of the wing on the water is also significantly lower than the deflection on the scales would suggest. Above all, the fact that the wingtips have been kept noticeably slimmer than on the Wind Wing ensures that you have significantly less contact with the water - regardless of whether you are pumping or landing a 360°. The centre line is quite thin at the rear, which means that the trailing edge of the wing stays up for a long time even if you ride small waves downwind.

Conclusion:

The RRD Evo convinces as a powerful and handy wing with good features. It is particularly suitable for manoeuvres and jumps. Thanks to its neutral flight behaviour, it is also ideal for drifting in the waves. Only in the hands of very heavy riders (>90 kilos) does the wing seem almost a little soft. The bottom line is: the Evo is also well suited for freeriding, but the better freeride characteristics are achieved with the firmer RRD Wind Wing, which is easier to control in gusts. If your focus is more on manoeuvres, freestyle and waves, you should go for the RRD Evo.
