In addition to the standard Aura model, Vayu has also launched the Aura X, a version made from Aluula material. The third version of the high-priced luxury wing, the Aura X3, is now available - we have already had the opportunity to test the new model.
The Aura X3 is available in the sizes 3.5/4.0/4.5/5.0/5.5/6.0 and as a light wind version with 6.5 square metres - we were able to try out the 5.5 size. The Wing differs from the standard version of the Aura in particular through the use of the lightweight Aluula Aeris material in the front tube and strut area, which is of course also reflected in the price - 1859 euros is the official retail price. Because the Aluula material is also very stiff, the thickness of the front tube has been reduced compared to the previous model, which should reduce air resistance and improve handling. The thin carbon boom with a grippy coating is included in the scope of delivery and now fits all sizes from 3.5 to 5.5 square metres - a point of criticism from the past has thus been eliminated. A longer boom is still only required for sizes 6.0 and 6.5. Alternatively, the click system also allows you to switch to short handles.
The flawless profile tightening of the Aura X3 is also noticeable in comparison with other competitor wings, especially in the front area near the leading edge. The profile is moderately deep, the aspect ratio (wingspan) is significantly higher than that of the sister model EOS 2 is the casewhich should allow the Wing to drift more neutrally. Although the windows are pleasantly insensitive to kinks, the tightly latticed material significantly restricts visibility. The Wing is ventilated via a SUP valve, but thanks to a connecting hose you don't have to change the plugs when ventilating. There is an additional valve on the strut for venting. The Kevlar seam covers on the front tube look very solid and the front handle is also thick and suitably dimensioned.
The 5.5 Aura X3 is so light in the hands that you could be forgiven for thinking you were flying a much smaller wing. Even in absolute light winds, it floats freely over your head, and despite its tight profile, it willingly accepts pumping and immediately converts this into lift. In absolute light winds, the recommended inflation pressure for this model can also be undercut by a good psi, as the wing can then be pumped even more efficiently. Overall, the Aura X3 offers good flight stability in a straight line and achieves a high top speed. Even in strong gusts, the centre of effort remains firmly cemented between the hands, and the continuous boom allows you to select the grip position with millimetre precision. Control impulses are transmitted 1:1, making the Aura X3 particularly easy to control in manoeuvres.
Due to the design with a larger span, you naturally have the problem of the wing tips touching the water a little earlier when pumping, especially smaller riders notice the difference to the more compact EOS 2. The fact that the strut can be a little shorter on the Vayu Aura X3 is all the more noticeable elsewhere, because the trailing edge of the wing floats upwards for a pleasingly long time during downwind manoeuvres. This strength also comes into its own when riding waves or downwinders - the X3 balances itself perfectly so that you can concentrate solely on the next ride. The well-dimensioned and firm front handle also contributes to the fact that the wing can be guided wonderfully in a neutral position. Of course, freestyle tricks and rotations are also easy with the Aura X3, as the wing enables very good top speed, is light in the hands and offers decent lift.
The Vayu Aura X3 is a great all-rounder with good light wind performance. Manoeuvre handling and wind range are state of the art. The Wing is therefore ideal for freeriding and racing, also as a suitable motor for fast foils. The neutrality when riding waves is also at the highest level. Only those who are clearly focussing on freestyle moves and rotations will be better off with the sister model EOS 2 due to its more compact dimensions and slightly more lift when jumping.
