With the EOS V3, manufacturer Vayu is launching an update to its allround wings onto the market. The new model is available in eight sizes from 2.5 to 6.0 square metres and in two colour variants. We were able to test the size 5.0 extensively.
Compared to its predecessor, the EOS V3 is significantly more compact, i.e. designed with a smaller wingspan. The profile tightening is high and flawless, especially in the front area; the wing is deliberately cut a little looser towards the trailing edge to enable efficient pumping. Although the large windows offer a generous viewing corridor to leeward, the xply material restricts the view somewhat. The strut has been redesigned: it now bends in a z-shape, creating space for gripping the continuous boom. In general, the EOS 3 now comes with its own click boom system as standard - in the past, this had to be purchased at extra cost. The boom can be (dis)assembled in seconds and without tools, which also has a positive effect on the pack size. The other features are also of a high standard: the seams on the wingtips are well protected. The front handle is pleasantly stiff and backed with a neoprene cover - so the handle offers good power transmission between rider and wing. The scope of delivery includes a matching leash and a bag.
The EOS 3 offers early lift even in light winds, which allows it to hover relaxed over your head when launching. With the right amount of pumping, you can elicit good light wind power from the wing. In a direct comparison with recognised light wind wings and the sister model Aura 4 the EOS 3 does not quite achieve the same light wind performance. Once lifted off, however, the wing offers an optimum mix of flight stability and agility. This means that the wing is pleasantly balanced in a straight line and even less experienced wingfoilers have no problems finding a stable flying position. In manoeuvres, you benefit from the wing's light weight and compact wingspan. This makes it easy to steer, rotate and guide through all manoeuvres. The tip-to-tip change is particularly quick when turning. The same picture emerges in freestyle use: compact dimensions, a profile that is not too deep and a light weight are the ideal ingredients for fast rotations and flips.
And in the wave? Even if an Aura 4 seems a little more neutral here, the EOS 3 also masters this hurdle: it levells out well, drifts without any trubble and the trailing edge of the wing hardly tends to sink when riding downwind. If the wind picks up and strong gusts come through, you can stay relaxed: Thanks to its high profile tension, it tolerates gusts without any problems and is always stable in the hand. The pressure point remains reliably between the hands, no fluttering disturbs the smooth flight.
Are you looking for a wing that can do everything? Then you can't go past the Vayu EOS 3. The wing scores with solid power, first-class handling, a large wind range and top manoeuvrability for a maximum target group. This ranges from wingfoil beginners to freeriders and ambitious freestylers. Only those looking for maximum light wind power in combination with large foils and long boards will prefer the Aura 4 model a little more. The same applies if you want to use the wing mainly for downwinding and surfing in the waves; then the Aura also offers a touch more neutrality.
