Jaykay has issued a safety warning for its e-fins. The manufacturer is asking all owners to refrain from charging the devices for the time being. The reason for this is a possible fire risk with deeply discharged lithium-ion batteries. A deep discharge is possible, especially after a long winter break.
The company emphasises that there is no danger from uncharged devices. The measure is purely a precautionary measure. Jaykay is currently working on a solution to reliably recognise deeply discharged batteries, according to the press release. Corresponding instructions are to be published within the next four weeks on the specially created status page at www.jaykay-sport.de/pages/safety will be published. Until then, the recommendation is not to charge the e-Finn. According to the manufacturer, non-charging poses no danger whatsoever.
Update: In the meantime, Jaykay has announced that a new power supply unit is to be introduced to rectify the problems. There will be more information on this in the coming week
Lithium-ion batteries can become deeply discharged if the e-Finn is not used for a longer period of time or has been stored with an empty battery. Charging a defective or deeply discharged battery can pose a fire risk under unfavourable circumstances.
The warning is aimed at all owners of an e-fin from the manufacturer, regardless of how often they use the device or how old it is. The company has set up a dedicated e-mail address for queries: safety@jaykay-sport.de. There, affected users can report questions about the security warning.
