Lake Sils is practically round the corner from Lake Silvaplana and, like the latter, also benefits from the Majola wind. However, for many years now there have been no more surfing events on the lake, which used to be the backdrop for the Engadin surf marathon. The Foil Mania Youth association, which promotes young talent in various foil sports, has now been granted one of the rare exceptions and invited to the iQFoil camp on the lake from 10 to 18 August.
"The Regional Association of Central Switzerland was able to convince the municipality of Bregaglio to grant us this licence," reports club chairman Alex Strub. "Of course, we didn't miss out on this opportunity and organised a professional iQFoil camp with our coach Fabio Fumagalli!"
In addition to the four junior riders from the Foil Mania team, athletes from the partner clubs in southern Germany were also invited. "In our opinion, a good training group comprises 6-8 windsurfers," says Alex Strub. "That's why we work closely with other regions in Switzerland." The training partners in Sils were Lenny Friemel from SV Wacker Burghausen and Niels Präger from Segel Club Öhningen. The Swiss locals were Robin Zeley, Devin Hauser, Finley Evans and Nino Livio Lofterød.
Various courses and medal races were practised
The camp offered ideal conditions, with wind on all seven days. The programme included course race, downwind slalom and marathon, as well as the special medal race formats. There were also start training sessions, speed tests and tips on setting up equipment, video analysis and fitness. The SUI Sailing performance centre in St. Moritz was also used for this purpose.
Foil Mania Youth is an association that supports young talent in foil water sports. Training sessions and camps are organised in cooperation with various water sports associations, clubs and regions in order to provide an optimal training environment. Competitions are also organised and high-performing athletes are developed in a targeted manner. The organisation is supported by companies, foundations, associations and patrons. The camp is to be organised again next year.
