Michele Becker is drawing a line under his career as a professional windsurfer. The athlete from Kiel announced his final retirement today via Instagram video. After a one-year break from competition, which he announced in June 2025, the foil specialist will not be returning to the international stage: "I feel like my body is simply not meant to be that of a professional athlete," says Becker, describing the central problem behind his decision. The persistent back problems that had been affecting him for some time could not be brought under control. Added to this is his new role as a father, which has shifted his priorities. Actually, 2026 was supposed to be his last big year as a professional in the World Cup. This planned farewell will no longer materialise.
Michele Becker has established himself as one of the leading foil windsurfers at international level in recent years. As a specialist in this relatively young discipline, the Kiel native is one of the world's best and has achieved podium finishes in various competitions. Becker has represented Germany at numerous international events and made a significant contribution to the development and popularity of foil windsurfing.
Becker already had back problems during his active career. In June 2025, he spoke publicly about his health problems for the first time. "It's still up and down with my back problems," he explained at the time. Despite further medical advice and an overall positive development, the athlete never felt fit enough for a full return. The one-year break was intended to give him time to regenerate and at the same time create space for his new role as a father. However, this time out did not lead to the hoped-for recovery. Instead, he realised during the break that a permanent continuation of his career would not be possible.
The birth of his first child in July 2025 marked a turning point in Becker's life. "We're having a baby next month, which of course we're really looking forward to!" he declared in June 2025. The new phase of life with his wife required his full attention. "I have the feeling that this deserves my full attention," Becker emphasised at the time. The double burden of professional sport and fatherhood seemed incompatible to him. The decision in favour of the family and against competitive sport was made after intensive consideration. Becker wanted to concentrate fully on his new role instead of being torn between training, competitions and family commitments.
Becker expressed his gratitude for the support he received during his difficult decision-making phase. "I can only say thank you to my family, friends, fans and partners for your understanding and continuous support," emphasised the Kiel native. His main sponsor Patrik was behind the decision. In an official statement, he said: "Life means change. Adapting to these changes is more important than sticking to an outdated plan. Supporting these changes is the key to a strong partnership between a brand and a professional rider." The sponsor's reaction shows an understanding of Becker's personal situation. The support from those around him made it easier for him to end his career.
