Maria Behrens sensationally took second place on Sylt and has now been voted "Sportswoman of the Year" in her home town of Lübeck.
The readers of "Lübecker Nachrichten" have voted Maria Behrens Sportswoman of the Year. This is the first time a female windsurfer has won the award.

Maria Behrens won the vote for "Sportswoman of the Year" in her home town of Lübeck by a margin of almost 500 votes. "This is mega, cool, thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. I have goosebumps, I'm really happy," said the 21-year-old to the Lübecker Nachrichten (LN) newspaper, which organised the vote.

This is the first time that the winner in the Hanseatic city has come from the field of windsurfing. Last year, Maria was also nominated for the award and came fourth at the time. As "Sportswoman of the Year", Behrens crowns a sensational 2023 season: Firstly, her outstanding march through to second place at the World Cup Sylt, followed by a fourth place at the Aloha Classic on Maui, where she even stood on the podium after the single elimination. Behrens thus proved that she is one of the top riders on the tour in down-the-line conditions.

Next up is a trip to the Bahamas for a photo shoot and training, as she revealed to "LN".

Windsurfers have also been nominated in Lower Saxony for the Sportsman's Choice: You can vote for the two raceboarders Jenny Bouhier and Lasse Brudek until the end of January:

His surfing CV includes all the famous choppy water spots: As a teenager, he went from his home in Münsterland to the Ijsselmeer or the Brouwersdam, and during his civilian service on Sylt, after countless washes on the west side, the Königshafen became his preferred spot. After studying in Kiel and Heidkate, he was supposed to go to Hamburg “only for a short time”, but this short time has lasted for over ten years and has made him a “weekend warrior”. He goes on tour with his family and camper van as often as possible, often to the Baltic Sea, SPO or Denmark, but also likes to go to Finland, Sweden or Sardinia.
