PWA ranking: Who will be world champion and when?Photo: Carter/pwaworldtour.com
We have calculated the scenarios for the World Championship titles
Three world championship titles will be awarded at the World Cup Sylt. We show you what the chances are for Lina Erpenstein, Philip Köster and their competitors and who has to finish where!

Waveriding ladies

Lina Erpenstein's brilliant race to catch up in Pozo has put her in a very good position to fulfil her dream of winning the World Championship title. This has come a little closer because both Daida and Iballa Moreno will not be able to take part in Sylt. But there is also Sarah-Quita Offringa, reigning wave world champion and permanent title holder in women's freestyle and slalom. And Justyna Sniady from Poland is also still in the running. So how should Lina Erpenstein position herself?

  • If Sarah-Quita Offringa wins, she is world champion
  • If Offringa finishes second, she will still be world champion if Erpenstein or Sniady win
  • If Offringa finishes third and Justyna Sniady doesn't win, Lina Erpenstein will only need a second place to become world champion
  • If Offringa finishes third and Justyna Sniady doesn't win, Lina Erpenstein will only need a second place to become world champion
  • Justyna Sniady must win and both Sarah-Quita Offringa and Lina Erpenstein must finish no better than third for the Pole to become world champion

In addition to the three title contenders, Steffi Wahl and Maaike Huvermann from Holland are also in the mix and have what it takes to finish in the top 3. The up-and-coming riders Maria Morales Navarro and Sol Degrieck are also good for a surprise.

Waveriding men

With the Cup in Cape Verde, the men had one more event than the women, so the options for points are a little more complicated. As there are more points in the double elimination from fifth place onwards than in a single elimination, both scenarios have to be considered:

Single elimination

  • If Marcilio Browne finishes at least fourth in the single elimination, he is world champion, no matter what else happens.
  • If Brawzinho finishes in a tie for fifth place, Thomas Traversa or Victor Fernandez will have to win the single elimination to take the title from him
  • If Browne finishes in a tie for ninth place, Philip Köster and Ricardo Campello would also have a chance. If Köster wins the single elimination in this scenario, he would be the world championship leader, while Campello would have to win and Traversa and Fernandez would have to finish third for Campello to jump to the top spot

Double elimination

  • A fifth place or better would mean the World Championship title for Marcilio Browne (see above)
  • If Brawzinho finishes sixth, Fernandez or Traversa would have to win the event to become world champion
  • The same applies if Browne were to finish seventh
  • If Browne were to finish ninth, Philip Köster would have to win the event to become world champion. If he doesn't win, Fernandez and Traversa would have to finish at least second to win the world title
  • If Browne finishes ninth and Ricardo Campello wins the event, then Traversa and Fernandez would also have to finish second to become world champions. If they don't manage that, Ricardo is world champion

Freestyle

As Sylt is the only freestyle event this year, the scenario is relatively simple: whoever wins here is the world champion.

Slalom

The slalom pilots will most likely have two more regattas after the World Cup Sylt, so there will be no preliminary decisions yet.
