The second tour stop in the junior regatta series "Nordic Championship" took place in Born on the Saaler Bodden last weekend. There are two starting fleets: in the international youth class Techno 293 One Design or in the open funboard class (limited to boards with fins).
A total of 16 surfers aged between 10 and 16 from Flensburg, Surendorf near Kiel, Braunschweig, Berlin and regional starters from Rostock and Schwerin took part. On Saturday morning, the wind initially blew 6-8 kn from the east-southeast, coupled with bright sunshine. The race committee decided in favour of tactical course racing with "Up&Down with Leegate". The first three races, each lasting 25 minutes, were completed by 2 p.m. and all three were won by Gustav Grünbaum (GER-723) from Rostock. The runners-up were Philipp Köhlert, Fritz Böhlke and Fritz Grünbaum from the Rostock training group. Later, there were two more course races, some of them in gliding conditions. Pauline Bruch from Kiel dominated these two races in stronger winds. Unfortunately, she had stayed ashore in the morning for health reasons and was therefore unable to compete in the title race.
On the second day of the regatta, there were again course races with 7-12 knots from the west and overcast skies. Gustav Grünbaum dominated here too with three wins, Philipp Köhlert followed with 3, 2, 2 and Noah Schmäh with individual results of 2, 3, 4. The three drivers confirmed their performances from the previous day.
As the wind was up to 15 knots at times, the course was changed to slalom. Unfortunately, the wind dropped a little during the break and so only two slalom races could be started at the planing threshold between 8-12 knots as a "fun classification" outside the official overall classification. Eleven-year-old Fritz Grünbaum showed two perfect "zero starts" and won the fun slalom classification with a third and first place ahead of Fritz Böhlke and Philipp Köhlert.
The "Nordic Championships" series was launched in May at the MüritzSail in Waren, followed by two more tour stops on 2 and 3 September in Flensburg and the finale on 16 and 17 September in Rerik on the Salzhaff. Two out of four events will be counted in the tour ranking in order to keep the entry hurdle for an overall ranking low.
