44 juniors took part in the World Cup in Pozo, a lot of potential for the future and a very high level among many starters! The conditions were not ideal by Pozo standards, with rideable waves being particularly rare in the rocky bay. The dilemma: the best waves were close to the bunker, but the wind was much lighter there. With two jumps and one wave that were scored in the 12-minute heats, the best tactic was therefore to show two good jumps upwind and, as soon as they were in the box, head for the bunker and hope for good waves.
In the U17 girls' category, it was the Belgian Sol Degrieck who did it best. Only 13 years old, she already caused quite a stir last year when she knocked out Lina Erpenstein, and recently she even competed in the IWT contest in Fiji. Degrieck won all three heats, for her it was more of a warm-up for the double elimination in the main round.
Alexia Kiefer Quintana initially suffered a defeat at her home spot in the first heat against Isabel Trivino Delgado, who is in fifth place in the women's main round. In the repechage round (the juniors race on the WSL principle), she then won against Lisa Wermeister. When they met up again with Isabel Trivino Delgado, Alexia started with a strong wave and a backloop that put her clearly in the lead, which she did not relinquish until the end.
The boys in the U15 and U17 classes were able to complete the first rounds until the conditions got worse and worse. Peter Gobisch won his U15 heat and went straight through to the semi-finals. Carlos Kiefer Quintana also left nothing to be desired at his home spot and progressed directly. A strong opponent awaited him there in the form of Japan's Ryu Ngochi, who impressed with some great wave riding in his heat.
After a break, the conditions in Pozo had stabilised enough to continue. Peter Gobisch unfortunately lost his semi-final against Javier Escribano Toribio, but then won the heat for third place against Björn Olesen from Denmark. Carlos Kiefer, on the other hand, not only beat Ryu Ngochi, but also Arthur van den Brande from Belgium in the U17 final. Kiefer performed almost the entire repertoire: stalled forwards, one-handed backloops, shaka on the wave, pushloop - an impressive show!
The U20 boys are still on the programme for the next few days, including Anton Richter, Luca Bühler, Hannes Gobisch, Lennart Neubauer and Liam Dunkerbeck. So things could get exciting. The Masters are also due to take to the water. The forecasts don't look like the best conditions at the moment, but Pozo has often surprised us in the past!
