Nine all-rounders for flat water and small waves: How good are freemove boards with around 115 litres? A preview of the test in surf 3/2023!

Rarely have we envied our colleagues more: While Germany is drowning in rain, snow and sleet, the surf test team in Tobago was able to chase the latest 2023 freeride equipment over turquoise waters. Among other things, freemove boards in the 115 litre size were on board in the Caribbean.

Why this particular size, which is included in a surf test for the first time? "The board group is very suitable for light intermediates who can learn the power jibe on it," explains test director Stephan Gölnitz. "At the same time, they are also very suitable as an all-round board for heavier surfers who only want to ride one board." The boards can also be ridden with sails between 4.5 and 7.0 square metres over a very wide wind range.

Gölnitz describes the first impression of the test candidates as follows: "Some boards are good in the waves, others are more for heating and jibing." This is also reflected in the equipment, from a multifin setup with four fins included (Exocet) to a more freeride-orientated single fin (Tabou 3S Classic), everything is included. However, almost all boards can be ridden as thrusters and are therefore fun, especially for heavy surfers, even in moderate waves.

Tobi is our digital man, he looks after the surf website and social media channels and gets on everyone's nerves every morning by asking for more pictures and videos. His surfing CV includes all the famous choppy water spots: As a teenager, he went from his home in Münsterland to the Ijsselmeer or the Brouwersdam, and during his civilian service on Sylt, after countless washes on the west side, the Königshafen became his preferred spot. After studying in Kiel and Heidkate, he was supposed to go to Hamburg “only for a short time”, but this short time has lasted for over ten years and has made him a “weekend warrior”. He goes on tour with his family and camper van as often as possible, often to the Baltic Sea, SPO or Denmark, but also likes to go to Finland, Sweden or Sardinia.
