In surf 9/2023, we take a close look at eleven freeride boards with a volume of around 160 litres. Some of these are suitable as a first board for planing intermediates, but they can also be used as freeride boards for heavy surfers, for very large sails or even as children's boards.

Do glide climbers need a board with a centreboard after the course? Or with an additional centre fin? Or is a large freeride board perhaps enough? We investigated these typical questions on Lake Garda and also tested the eleven boards in the test group for gliding performance, speed and manoeuvrability. Some of the test candidates are very powerful early gliders that can (almost) hold their own against the foils.
