Wave sail test 2023: The North Sails Wave 4.7 in the individual evaluation with all strengths and weaknesses

Fibres are laminated in the direction of tension using a high-tech process, so the sail has only 3.5 battens and almost no seams. 2.27 kilos is a truly fabulous weight, but this is also achieved by dispensing with a lot of chafe protection. When sheeting in, the visible longitudinal crease along the luff turns into a deep profile. Because the boom is rather short and the sail is quite agile overall, it requires some technique and skill to get it planing.

Once up to speed, the North feels very full in the hand and conveys a lot of power, the profile is buttery soft and consistently swallows hard chops. It is also surprising that the control is convincing despite only 3.5 battens. As soon as you put the sail down or rotate it in a manoeuvre, you can't help but grin: no other model is so agile and light as a feather in the hand. This also applies to wave riding, where the North Wave combines powerful drive with ultimate handling - perfect for powerful turns and wave manoeuvres of all kinds.

Surf summary of the North Sails Wave 4.7

The North Wave offers unique handling, plenty of drive and maximum potential for cracks. If you are looking for a more powerful sail for flat water and bump & jump, you should consider the North X-Over.
