Wave sail test 2023: The Patrik 5 Wave 4.6 in the individual evaluation with all strengths and weaknesses

With a luff length of 403 centimetres, the 5 Wave can be ridden on 370 and 400 mm masts. The 5-batten concept is fairly flat on land, but pulls an impressive belly when close-hauled. The Patrik sail still looks a little bulky on the 370 cm mast when it is bobbing; sail draft is converted into speed with a slight delay. When powered up, however, the Patrik 5 Wave is pleasantly cushioned and noticeably lighter in the hand.

On the wave, the 5 Wave shows different faces depending on the trim: rigged belly up, it offers a lot of ground pull and propulsion in the bottom turn - ideal for bringing the speed up to the cutback even in slack wind or wave conditions. Set up with more trim sheet tension, the 5 Wave turns into a neutral wave sail with a nice off - and good pressure point stability in strong winds. In manoeuvres such as duck jibes or loops, the sail is damped in the hand, even though it is not one of the absolute lightweights.

Surf summary of the Patrik 5 Wave 4.6

The Patrik 5 Wave presents itself as versatile - it can be tuned for both powerful side-offshore days as well as slack conditions and perhaps offers a little less power overall than the Patrik 4Wave, but a better wind range.

Good combination of off & drive

Retaining forces in the dampening system
