Wave sail test 2023: The Severne S1 4.8 in the individual evaluation with all strengths and weaknesses

The alternative to the 5-batten Blade model is one of the lightest sails on the market and is rigged on a 400 mast. Moderate loose leech in the top area is ideal, further trim adjustments are mainly made on the outhaul rope. In medium trim, the S1 offers a great mix of a firm ride and the necessary profile damping, which quickly creates a full profile when close-hauled and ensures good planing performance.

The wind range is surprisingly large, there is hardly any need to trim, and the centre of effort is quite stable. The Severne S1 conveys an on-off characteristic like hardly any other sail: it really charges up when close-hauled and pulls powerfully through the bottom turn, but can switch off the power at the push of a button and then shine with great neutrality. In manoeuvres, whether in the jibe or backloop, the S1 is wonderfully light and playful in the hand anyway.

Surf summary of the Severne S1 4.8

Whether power, handling or control - the S1 plays in the Champions League everywhere. From the Ijsselmeer to Cape Town, there is hardly a spot where the sail would not be in good hands. In comparison, the Blade offers a tad more control.
