Wavesail test 2023: The Loftsails Wavescape 4.7 in the individual evaluation with all strengths and weaknesses

The Wavescape enters the race with a high clew, flat basic characteristics and high-quality features. The material mix looks solid, trim markings help with tuning and the mast protector can be opened wide to adjust the extension, for example. In light winds, you can also give the Loftsails less luff tension than recommended - the sail only needs very little tension at the boom to develop enough profile. It is not one of the most planing sails, but loads up noticeably better than the Purelip tested in 2022.

When powered up, the Wavescape stabilises well, is wonderfully balanced in the hand and rotates quite nimbly in loops and mono manoeuvres thanks to its flat profile. The control in strong winds is outstanding. On the wave, it is particularly impressive in powerful conditions with a lot of wind, when it is easy to steer and shines with an above-average off. This is often a plus, especially in side-offshore conditions. Conversely, it sometimes lacks a bit of power to carve powerful turns in slack waves and cross onshore winds.

Surf summary of the Loftsails Wavescape 4.7

A force in strong winds or powerful waves, but also somewhat weak-chested and therefore not a power sail for heavy chunks.
