Well-trained and focussed! Lennart Neubauer has been waiting a long time for this moment - to finally show what he can do. A few years ago, the young freestyle talent was already on the verge of a breakthrough. A Red Bull contract, big projects, high goals and high expectations, but then: a coronavirus break and a long-term knee injury. However, he used his time off the pitch wisely, graduated from school and trained harder than anyone else. Now he's back, stronger than ever, and is starting to make his mark.
The 36-year-old, five-time European champion Steven van Broeckhoven from Belgium, fought his way to the grand final against Lennart in the second round against some renowned riders. First, he stopped his compatriot and 2019 European champion Yental Caers, who met Lennart early in the first round and was eliminated. Steven then went on to beat Sam Esteve and even the reigning champion and runner-up Jacopo Testa from Italy. The grand final was thus decided: Lennart Neubauer, who was surfing in his first major international final, against Steven, who is 18 years older and has already surfed so many finals that he has lost count. A true battle of the generations!
In extremely demanding conditions at the lower wind limit, the two showed their entire repertoire of light wind tricks - a combination of highly technical power moves such as Culo 360 or Air-Funnel, as well as slid old school manoeuvres with a very high degree of difficulty, such as Chachoos, or Steven's standard move in light winds: the Barracuda - a crazy combination of Willy Skipper and Switch Chachoo. Even Steven sometimes needs two attempts to land this trick. In the end, however, Lennart was just three points ahead and won the competition on Lake Neusiedl.
