Highlights: Day 9 at the World Cup Sylt - Bosson World Champion after heart-stopping final

In the end, it was a wafer-thin 0.1 points that made Adrien Bosson the new world champion. The Frenchman, who had already won the single elimination on Monday, narrowly lost the first final to Jacopo Testa from Italy. Here, too, the race was extremely close, with the lead changing hands several times during the heat. The upcoming super final was even closer, so that in the end nobody was able to predict who had won. The result confirmed the impression. Jacopo Testa was also genuinely delighted with his second place.

"I didn't expect that, light winds are actually more Jacopo's strength," said Bosson afterwards, visibly moved. Both finalists were on the water early in the morning to familiarise themselves with the difficult conditions. Relatively weak, flat onshore winds made it difficult to ensure fair conditions for all riders throughout the day. While Testa used a relatively large 5.2 sail, the new world champion Bosson opted for a 4.8. "I feel most comfortable with this size, I have more control with the big chop," said the Frenchman.

Wind at the lower limit

After yesterday's heats only the top eight were still in the race in freestyle. With only one event this year, the double elimination played an important role and the race organisers did everything they could to complete it. However, the conditions were close to the limit and heats had to be cancelled several times in the morning. The wind only stabilised around midday.

At first, it looked like Dieter van der Eyken would catch up. The 2015 world champion won against Takuma Sugi, Sam Esteve and Antony Ruenes, only coming to an end against Yentel Caers. At this stage of the double elimination, the respective winners always have to compete again directly with just one heat break before they meet a rested rider who is fresh in the action. In the end, this meant fifth place for van der Eyken, with Yentel Caers finishing fourth.

Caers lost to Jacopo Testa, who has already achieved impressive results on the European freestyle tour in recent years. Testa then went on to march through and beat Steven van Broeckhoven in the exciting final. Van Broekhoven thus slipped to third place.

Supersession in waveriding

After the announcement of the new world champion, an attempt was made to continue the double elimination in the men's wave riding. However, the first heat, which included Klaas Voget, had to be cancelled. The wind and waves were too weak for fair conditions.

A super session was then scheduled for the evening, with the craziest move in 30 minutes being the winner. World champion Marcilio Browne tried a switch stance aerial, Victor Fernandez celebrated an eagle wing. Maaike Huvermann performed a shaka, while Antoine Martin destroyed his rig in a shorebreak.

The World Cup Sylt continues tomorrow

Last day at the Mercedes-Benz Windsurf World Cup Sylt, the big award ceremony is scheduled for 15:00 on the event stage. Before that there is still a small chance of further races. Unfortunately, the forecast promises even less wind than today, so further wave heats are rather unlikely. The wind should be sufficient for further slalom eliminations, provided the shore break allows a safe exit.
