Like many other events, the PWA World Cup in Tenerife is dependent on the support of local institutions. This applies to financial commitment as well as the granting of licences or logistical support. As this cannot currently be planned with certainty on Tenerife, the World Cup planned for 5 to 13 August off El Medano has had to be cancelled.
"We had been waiting for the results of the local elections, which took place on 28 May, but as the vote was very close, final confirmation of the results and new officials is not expected for several weeks," said the PWA. "Therefore, the organisers felt that they could not wait any longer and would instead turn their focus to the 2024 event."
Tenerife local Dany Bruch in particular had recently worked hard to organise the World Cups in El Medano. However, the event could not take place in 2022 either. The bay is the venue for numerous camps and winter training grounds for many professionals throughout the year
After Marignane and Croatia, this is the third cancellation of a PWA event this year. Next on the agenda are Pozo and Fuerteventura, followed by Peru and Sylt. In autumn, the Aloha Clasic on Maui and two slalom events in Japan and New Caledonia are still on the calendar. But even then, cancellations cannot be ruled out.
