Wave contest in Scotland: Registration for the Tiree Wave Classic is now open

For the 39th time, wave riders from the UK and around the world will gather on the Scottish island of Tiree from 14 to 20 October for the Wave Classic - making the event a longer tradition than, for example, the Aloha Classic off Hookipa. And there is the most impressive trophy in the sporting world to be won, a real sword.

Registration for the Tiree Wave Classic 2023 is still open until 1 August. Traditionally, many British pros like to come to Scotland because the event offers excellent conditions and a family atmosphere. Newcomers and amateur surfers are also always welcome. This year, the two-star contest is part of the IWT and PWA's big wave tour, so some international pros are also likely to make their way to Scotland.

Quintessential charm and beautiful beaches

IWT Director Simeon Glasson is delighted to be working with the organisers: "The Tiree Wave Classic is one of the oldest and proudest wave events in the world. The winning legend. The legacy is profound. We are incredibly excited that the Tiree Wave Classic is now part of the historic new Wave Tour," said Glasson. "Every competitor at Tiree will automatically be included in the global leaderboard."

Last year's winner Julian Salmonn was delighted with the spots and the event on his first visit to the island: "Tiree enchanted us with its rugged charm, the two weeks on the island went by far too quickly. Windy almost all the time, fabulously beautiful, wild beaches, a wide variety of training conditions and the wonderful evenings - with the stories of the day, in the pub with friends. All of this makes us very wistful on our return journey. We would love to stay longer."

Tiree is one of the windiest places in the world

Geographically, Tiree is located off the coast of Scotland, at the southern end of the inner hybrids. The island therefore receives direct swell from the open Atlantic as well as the foothills of the Gulf Stream. This means surfable conditions almost all year round - with a water temperature that never drops below ten to twelve degrees Celsius, even in the depths of winter. Fishing is one of the traditional economic sectors, the effects of which can also be clearly felt on Tiree.

In the summer months, Tiree is very popular with tourists due to its beautiful beaches, but in autumn and spring there is much less tourism. The winter months belong to the storms and there are hardly any beach walkers to be found. According to statistics, the numerous spots on the island are among the windiest places on the planet.
