Young riders receive a subsidy for the island events of the German Windsurfing Cup.
This year, junior racers can receive a subsidy for travelling expenses for the DWC events on Sylt and Borkum. With up to 400 euros, the GWA wants to make it easier for juniors to take part in the German Windsurfing Cup.

Three of the six GWA (German Windsurfing Association) ranking regattas this season will take place on islands: The Multivan Summer Opening Sylt from 18 to 21 May, the Multivan Windsurf Cup Borkum with the IFCA Slalom European Championships from 8 to 11 June (Corpus Christi) and the Multivan Surf Cup Sylt with the International German Championships from 25 to 30 July.

There are discounts for participants in the German Windsurfing Cup for ferries and car trains. Nevertheless, travelling to these ranking list regattas is more expensive than to mainland spots. The GWA would like to help ensure that the greater effort and higher costs do not deter young regatta participants from taking part in the Windsurfing Cup Tour. The GWA Board has therefore decided to grant direct travel allowances for the three island events for all young GWA full members. At the end of March, the scheme was extended to apprentices and students.

Each of the two Sylt events will receive a 100 euro travel allowance. For Borkum, there is even 200 euros in support, as the increased entry fee due to the IFCA Slalom European Championships is added to the high travel costs. In total, young GWA full members can therefore receive up to 400 euros in travel expense support in 2023.

How the young windsurfing talent gets the grant

To qualify for the travel allowance, you must either be a Youth U21 (born in 2003 or later) and a full GWA member, or a trainee or student. Proof of this must be provided in the form of a corresponding receipt. In addition, you must have at least one valid result in the results list of the respective regatta. The application for a travel allowance can then be submitted informally to the GWA office after the regatta.

"We want the GWA junior team to be able to gain as much competition experience as possible in top-class fields at national regattas. One of the biggest hurdles for young sailors taking part in regattas is the cost. By subsidising travel costs, the sponsorship directly benefits the participants. We hope that we can inspire as many young GWA members as possible to take part in regattas," says Gerd Prien, Chairman of the Board of the German Windsurfing Association.

GWA repeatedly supports young talent with training projects or financial assistance. Last year, for example, three riders were sent to the IFCA Junior World Championships in Alacati. In addition, juniors were able to complete the Entry fees for DWC events reimbursed - this campaign is also to be continued in 2023.
