The third Saturday in June is International Surfing Day. Even if you haven't heard of it yet, it's a great opportunity to realise how exciting and versatile windsurfing is!

International Surfing Day is much more prominent in the surfing scene; the Surfrider Foundation launched the day in 2005. Since 2013, it has been designated as the third Saturday in June - so many surf enthusiasts have the day off and can organise the day in a special way. In the USA, there are numerous contests, beach parties, film evenings, beach clean-ups and much more on this day.

In California, Surfing Day is even officially recognised because it celebrates the state's surfing tradition and draws attention to the protection of beaches, oceans and waves.

In the gallery above, we have put together the best pictures that show why windsurfing is so great. Whether it's longboard fun in light winds, relaxed freeriding, big waves or freestyle tricks - everyone experiences very special moments when windsurfing!

How you can celebrate International Surfing Day

We have a few tips for you on what you can do today - based on a collection from the magazine "Surfer Today":

  1. Go surfing: Whatever the conditions, whatever the equipment, whether windsurfing, surfing, wingsurfing or SUPing - the main thing is to get out on the water!
  2. Surfing together: Go out on the water with friends or share waves with others!
  3. Collect rubbish: Should actually be commonplace, just pick up and dispose of any rubbish that catches your eye on the way back!
  4. Donations: A little money helps nature and marine conservation organisations to protect the ocean and its creatures
  5. Get informed: Why are the oceans so important and what are the biggest threats?
  6. Understanding the background: How do wind and waves actually develop and which elements interact? -> Surf explains the most important wind systems in the world
  7. Read a good book: Many books tell the story of surfing and windsurfing, e.g. "Hooked - Windsurfing`s untold stories"
  8. Adhere to the rules on the water: Distance, consideration for other surfers, swimmers and beach visitors and compliance with the right of way rules are all part of this! -> The right of way rules for windsurfing
  9. Indulge in memories: How many days have I been on the water? What were the best sessions and why?
  10. Enjoy the day with friends: A beer on the beach at sunset, a barbecue together or a surf film evening are the perfect way to end the day
