The third Saturday in June is ‘International Surfing Day’. Even if you haven’t heard of it before, it’s a great opportunity to realise just how exciting and varied windsurfing is!

In the surfing world, International Surfing Day is much more widely celebrated; the Surfrider Foundation launched the day in 2005. Since 2013, it has been set for the third Saturday in June – so many surfing enthusiasts have the day off and can make the most of it. In the USA, this day features numerous competitions, beach parties, film nights, beach clean-ups and much more.

In California, Surfing Day is even officially recognised because it celebrates the state’s surfing tradition and raises awareness of the need to protect beaches, the ocean and the waves.

In the gallery above, we’ve put together the best photos that show why windsurfing is so brilliant. Whether it’s having fun on a longboard in light winds, relaxed freeriding, big waves or freestyle tricks – everyone experiences some truly special moments when windsurfing!

Here’s how you can celebrate International Surfing Day

We’ve got a few tips for you on what you can get up to today – based on a round-up from “Surfer Today” magazine:

  1. Going for a surf: Whatever the conditions, whatever the equipment, whether it’s windsurfing, surfing, wing surfing or SUP – the main thing is to get out on the water!
  2. Surfing together: Head out onto the water with friends or share the waves with others!
  3. Collecting rubbish: It really should be part of everyday life – just pick up any rubbish you spot on your way back and bin it!
  4. Donations: A small donation helps nature and marine conservation organisations to protect the ocean and its wildlife
  5. Find out more: Why are the oceans so important, and what are the biggest threats to them?
  6. Understanding the background: How do wind and waves actually form, and which factors are involved? -> Surf explains the world’s main wind systems
  7. Reading a good book: There are many books that tell the story of surfing and windsurfing, for example: “Hooked – Windsurfing’s untold stories”
  8. Follow the rules on the water: Keeping your distance, showing consideration for other surfers, swimmers and beachgoers, and observing the right-of-way rules are all part of it! -> Right-of-way rules in windsurfing
  9. Reminiscing: How many days have I spent on the water so far? What were the best sessions and why?
  10. Enjoying the day with friends: A beer on the beach at sunset, a barbecue with friends or a surf film night are the perfect way to round off the day

His surfing CV includes all the famous choppy water spots: As a teenager, he went from his home in Münsterland to the Ijsselmeer or the Brouwersdam, and during his civilian service on Sylt, after countless washes on the west side, the Königshafen became his preferred spot. After studying in Kiel and Heidkate, he was supposed to go to Hamburg “only for a short time”, but this short time has lasted for over ten years and has made him a “weekend warrior”. He goes on tour with his family and camper van as often as possible, often to the Baltic Sea, SPO or Denmark, but also likes to go to Finland, Sweden or Sardinia.
