Philip Köster took victory at the 4-star World Cup in Chile, with his radical wave rides proving particularly impressive. Julian Salmonn came third and Leon Jamaer reached the semi-finals. Jane Seman won the women's event.

After almost a week of waiting, Chile's top spot Topocalma finally brought the dream conditions we had hoped for. There had already been enough waves in the last few days, but it was only yesterday that there was enough wind for the professional heats at the second event of the joint IWT and PWA wave tour. The action continued on Friday night until the final heats.

The conditions were fantastic: Head judge Simeon Glasson reported logo-high waves with steep faces that could easily be ridden for six to seven turns. The pictures clearly show that it was a festival of aerials and radical turns!

Jane Seman from Australia won all three heats in the women's event and took victory ahead of Björte Pürschel, who is of German descent and lives in Chile. In the men's event, Philip Köster showed just as impressive wave rides and aerials as the day before, winning both his semi-final and the subsequent final with ease. Many top riders were missing, as the event with only four stars is not decisive for winning the title this year.

Köster with radical rides, Camille Juban with foot problems

But with Camille Juban, Köster left one of the best down-the-line surfers in the world behind him, although he was hampered by a foot injury. "It's great to make it through to the final in these conditions," said a delighted Köster before the heat. The IWT reporter was impressed by his performance: "You jump incredible aerials and shred the waves, you almost feel sorry for them!"

You feel sorry for the waves!" (IWT commentator on Philip Köster's radical style)

Julian Salmonn took third place behind Camille Juban. "The waves are great, a bit smaller, but there are still a lot of sets coming in," reported the Tenerife local before the final. "The important thing is to wait for the big sets and be patient!" Baptiste Cloarec from France completed the top 4, having previously knocked out Leon Jamaer in the semi-final in third place.
